Sexual and reproductive health rights

OUR VALUES OUR VALUES OUR VALUES OUR VALUES OUR VALUES OUR VALUES OUR VALUES OUR VALUES OUR VALUES OUR VALUES

Everyone should be able to make their own choices regarding their body, their health and their sexuality

Access to sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR) is one of the main causes we fight for. We have devoted many of our projects to this cause over the past 40 years. Médecins du Monde currently works around the world to improve access to sexual and reproductive healthcare and to ensure that users’ rights are respected.

Sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR) cover fundamental aspects of a person’s life: their body, their sexuality, their health, their emotional and sexual relationships, and their parenting choices. As fundamental human rights, sexual and reproductive rights aim to promote independent living, and free and consensual sexuality, without violence or discrimination. These rights are an essential condition for progressing towards gender equality and the development of a more equitable and just society.

“Never forget that all it takes is a political, economic or religious crisis for women’s rights to be threatened.”

To this day, the exercise of sexual and reproductive rights is not effective for all. Millions of women and LGBTQI+ people suffer from discrimination which hinders their ability to fully enjoy their rights and to have access to sexual and reproductive health services.

Defending sexual and reproductive health rights

MdM defends access to sexual and reproductive health rights for everyone, both in France and around the world, without discrimination, at every stage of a person’s life, regardless of where they live, and including during emergency situations.

MdM has three priorities. There are three key aspects of SRHR which are neglected but which have a major impact on the mortality and morbidity of women and girls:

– preventing and managing unwanted pregnancies;
– responding to SRHR needs in crisis situations, including the migration crisis in France, and preventing and managing gender-based violence in particular;
– preventing and managing cervical cancer.

In addition, MdM is involved in reducing the risks associated with sex work and advocates for its decriminalisation.

OUR CAUSES

Sexual and reproductive rights are constantly under threat and opposition to them is always vocal. They are at the heart of revisionist and conservative policies, which continue to gain ground throughout the world.

MdM fights for sexual and reproductive health rights for all, as fundamental human rights. This work falls within a broader, intersectional feminist vision that MdM upholds.

EVERY NINE MINUTES A WOMAN DIES AS THE RESULT OF A CLANDESTINE ABORTION

EVERY NINE MINUTES A WOMAN DIES AS THE RESULT OF A CLANDESTINE ABORTION

Access to contraception and safe abortion is a public health issue. Too many women and girls, particularly in low-income countries and those living in vulnerable situations, have no control over their own sexual life. Médecins du Monde actively supports the right for all to be able to use safe and effective contraception (including emergency contraception) to avoid unwanted pregnancy as well as access to risk-free, legal abortion.

PROMOTING ACCESS TO SRHR IN EMERGENCY SITUATIONS AND FIGHTING AGAINST GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE

PROMOTING ACCESS TO SRHR IN EMERGENCY SITUATIONS AND FIGHTING AGAINST GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE

Emergency situations destabilise healthcare systems and exacerbate gender inequalities and other factors of socio-economic vulnerability. It becomes more difficult to access good quality and appropriate SRHR services.
Often underestimated and normalised, gender-based violence is a violation of universal rights including the right to life, security, and the prohibition of torture or any other cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment. As a medical actor, Médecins du Monde is committed to addressing SRHR needs and reporting on violence experienced by people in emergency situations.

BURKINA FASO: PROJECT TO COMBAT CERVICAL CANCER

BURKINA FASO: PROJECT TO COMBAT CERVICAL CANCER

Cervical cancer is a major public health problem. More than 311,00 women die every year from it, and more than 90% of cases are in low- and middle-income countries. Because cervical cancer is an avoidable and eradicable disease, in 2018 Médecins du Monde established projects to screen for and treat pre-cancerous cervical lesions in Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire.

28 MAY: GLOBAL MENSTRUAL HYGIENE DAY

28 MAY: GLOBAL MENSTRUAL HYGIENE DAY

Every day around the world, around 800 million people of reproductive age menstruate. It is a universal biological reality which is, nonetheless, surrounded by taboos and which is synonymous with acute vulnerability for many people. Menstruation is a question of health, rights and dignity, equality and safety.

Since 2014, the international community has dedicated the 28 May to a Global Menstrual Hygiene Day. The aim is to break the silence in order to fight against bans, shame and stigmatisation which are associated with menstruation around the world. It is essential to make appropriate and safe protection available, as well as to ensure sanitary facilities are available so that people who experience periods can continue to fully enjoy their sexual and reproductive health rights, the right to dignity, health, water and hygiene, and education.
