MIGRATION IS UNIVERSAL

All around the world, people migrate to seek protection and a better life. Médecins du Monde has worked with people in exile for a long time.

From the boat people who were lost at sea in China in the 1980s to those trying to cross the Mediterranean or the snow-capped mountains on the French-Italian border, our organisation constantly strives to help those who put their lives in danger to leave their country.

In Europe, South-East Asia, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East, we act at all stages of the migration journey. Although situations do differ, the political responses to them remain identical and the consequences for individuals are inevitably the same, damaging their health: rejection, violence, violation of the most fundamental of human rights, no access to healthcare, and exclusion.

Taking into account the reality of a world in movement, ever tougher migration policies, and the migration “crisis” that is hitting Europe, Médecins du Monde works closely with people at different stages of their migration journey, for whatever reason they are undertaking it.

MEHRH

OUR AIM

To support the most vulnerable people in their exile in order to provide healthcare and give them access to medical and psychosocial care.

The organisation raises awareness among local and national authorities of the need to treat these people and ensure they have effective access to high-quality healthcare.

MIGRATING PEOPLE, REFUGEES and EXILED PEOPLE ?

The term “migrating people”, which we prefer to the term “migrants”, refers to anyone who has left their country of origin, and therefore who has crossed at least one border, for any reason.

“Refugee” legally refers to anyone who has obtained protection under the right to asylum in line with the Geneva Convention of 1951.

“Asylum seekers” are those who have embarked upon the administrative procedures for requesting asylum in order to obtain the status of refugee. These people receive a residence permit while their asylum application is considered.

By “people in exile” who refer to migrants who have left their country for any reason, whether or not they have requested asylum and whether or not they are statutory refugees. We prefer this broader, non-legally based definition.

RECEIVING MIGRATING PEOPLE in France

RECEIVING MIGRATING PEOPLE in France

Migrating people experience a range of situations once they arrive in Europe. They sometimes end up living in conditions of extreme vulnerability and poverty.

The teams who develop “outreach” actions and offer support in our centres have long spoken out about the deterioration in the health of migrating people.

Demanding and sometimes traumatic migration journeys are often coupled with undignified reception facilities when they arrive in France.

In Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East, South-East Asia, social, political, economic and security crises push many people to flee their country and undertake migration journeys full of obstacles and yet more violence.
