THE HUMANITARIAN SITUATION IN YEMEN

Yemen is experiencing one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world. Around 18.2 million people (55% of the population) is in need of urgent humanitarian assistance. The conflict, which has been ongoing since 2014, continues to devastate communities and disrupt essential services.

  • A PROLONGED WAR

For over ten years, Yemen has been under fire due to clashes between Houthi rebels and the forces of the internationally recognised government. A truce has been in place since 2022, but the country is still suffering the consequences of the conflict, displacements, climate change and economic decline. The years of war have seen severe damage to infrastructure. This has particularly affected the health system, with half of healthcare facilities no longer functional and provision of medical supplies remaining extremely difficult.

  • REGIONAL TENSIONS

The humanitarian crisis in Yemen has been aggravated by regional conflicts, including the war in Gaza and the crisis in the Red Sea where geopolitical tensions and security threats have intensified.

The risk of conflict in this key area puts the stability of the whole region at risk and endangers humanitarian operations in Yemen. Disruption of maritime routes exacerbates food and medicine shortages, increasing the suffering of millions of people.

  • SEVERE FAMINE

17.6 million people – around half of the Yemeni population – are or will soon be experiencing severe food insecurity. There are 2.2 million children suffering from acute malnutrition and 1.3 million malnourished pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. 12.4 million Yeminis don’t have access to sufficient drinking water and 80% of the population is currently living below the poverty line.

OUR HUMANITARIAN WORK IN YEMEN

Médecins du Monde has been providing medical assistance in Yemen and supporting local healthcare facilities since 2007. We have also been working to improve access to healthcare in the country despite the conflict.

  • SUPPORTING HEALTHCARE FACILITIES

Médecins du Monde is supporting 20 healthcare facilities in Sana’a, Amanat, Aden, Lahij, Abyan and Ma’rib Governorates. This ensures that the population has access to medical consultations, antenatal and postnatal care, routine vaccinations, mental healthcare and psychosocial support, health education sessions and services for women and girls who have experienced gender-based violence.

In 2024, 211,000 primary care consultations were provided, over 5,000 births were attended and 1,654 malnourished children received treatment.

  • TRAINING AND PREVENTION TO TACKLE EPIDEMICS

In late 2024, 3,843 cases of cholera were recorded in Yemen, emphasising the need for epidemiological surveillance. Médecins du Monde is providing medicines, training, stronger prevention messages, personal protective equipment and technical support for healthcare staff from the Ministry of Health, as well as refurbishing damaged infrastructure.
