UKRAINIAN CRISIS

THE HUMANITARIAN SITUATION IN UKRAINE
Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion in February 2022, over 6.3 million refugees have fled to neighbouring countries and 3.6 million people have been displaced within the country. It’s the largest population displacement crisis in Europe since the Second World War.
It is estimated that around 12.7 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance, especially in the country’s eastern, north-eastern and southern regions.
The difficulties faced by the population during Ukraine’s harsh winter are exacerbated when increased power cuts disrupt heating systems. In addition, the war is having a significant impact on the Ukrainian economy. The agricultural centres and industrial heartlands in the east of the country have been devastated and around 30% of jobs that existed before the war have been lost.
Moreover, the WHO has recorded over 2,209 attacks on health facilities and ambulances since February 2022.
The psychological impacts on the population are huge and estimates suggest that around 10 million Ukrainians today are at risk of developing mental health problems. The main victims are displaced people, returnees, women, people with disabilities and households with members who have been actively involved in the war.

OUR HUMANITARIAN WORK IN UKRAINE
After supporting the Ukrainian Red Cross in Mykolaiv, Médecins du Monde is now also working in the Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia regions.
We are providing those who are most vulnerable with primary healthcare, including sexual and reproductive health, focusing in particular on gender-based violence. Mobile clinics and telemedicine consultations are being established to serve hard-to-reach areas where healthcare staff have left, especially in Kherson. Home care is also organised for older people by Manhust and psychological and psychosocial support services are systematically offered to respond to the many mental health needs in communities.
In Odesa and in Mykolaiv region Médecins du Monde is working with a Ukrainian organisation to provide access to specialist health services for the LGBTQIA+ communities.
