A NEW WAY OF GIVING
For several years, Médecins du Monde has been committed to diversifying its fundraising sources from the general public. In response to growing needs and multiple crises, it has become essential to explore new methods of fundraising.
Additionally, the implementation of the MiCA Regulation (Markets in Crypto-Assets) at the end of 2024 has profoundly transformed the European cryptocurrency ecosystem. This regulation now imposes strict requirements on sector participants: mandatory licensing, harmonisation of the framework across all 27 Member States, transparency regarding fees and risk management, enhanced protection of client and donor funds, as well as increased efforts to combat money laundering.
Taking advantage of this new secure environment and in the context of current financing challenges, Médecins du Monde has chosen to open, for a period of one year, the possibility of making donations in cryptocurrency. At the end of this period, an impact study will be conducted to evaluate this initiative.

Your donation can enable us to continue these actions in light of the withdrawal of public funding.
In France
Médecins du Monde manages 13 reception, care, and referral centres (CASO) and one reception, referral, and support centre (CAOA), which facilitate access to healthcare, prevention, and rights for the most vulnerable populations in France through comprehensive and multidisciplinary care. These facilities offer holistic support, including nursing care, medical consultations, prevention, screening, as well as social and psychosocial support, particularly for access to health coverage and mental health services. Public donations allow us to assist those in need and to defend their rights independently.
Abroad
In several countries, our programmes are already impacted by the withdrawal of funding, for example:
In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)
Médecins du Monde provides emergency assistance to internally displaced persons and runs long-term programmes.
In Madagascar
In response to health crises and a fragile healthcare system, Médecins du Monde provides emergency aid and strengthens access to sexual and reproductive health services.
In Colombia
Médecins du Monde enhances access to healthcare for populations affected by conflict and natural disasters.
Our Responses to Your Questions
What is cryptocurrency?
A cryptocurrency, or crypto asset, refers to virtual digital assets that rely on blockchain technology through a decentralised ledger and encrypted computing protocol. More broadly, cryptocurrencies are virtual assets stored on electronic platforms, enabling a community of users who accept them as payment to conduct transactions without needing to rely on legal tender.
Blockchain technology ensures that donations are very secure and transparent: each cryptocurrency donation is recorded publicly, which significantly reduces the risk of fraud. Our partner Lyzi also adheres to all current European security regulations.
How is the origin of the funds verified?
Our partner Lyzi and the associated payment service providers apply strict verification procedures to ensure that the funds received do not originate from illegal activities. Each donation is carefully examined, and security is further enhanced as the donation amount increases. If the guarantees are insufficient, the transaction is rejected.
Are cryptocurrencies held by Médecins du Monde?
The donations received in cryptocurrency are automatically converted into euros, and each day, the funds in euros are transferred to the organisation’s bank account. Therefore, no funds are kept in cryptocurrency; they are all used to carry out our actions in France and abroad.
How does Médecins du Monde deals with cryptocurrency fluctuations after my donation?
Cryptocurrency donations are automatically converted into euros. Every day, our partner Lyzi transfers the donations received the previous day to Médecins du Monde’s bank account. Thus, there is no risk of deflation, and Médecins du Monde can immediately use the funds to carry out its social mission.
How are cryptocurrencies donations used?
Cryptocurrency donations are automatically converted into euros and pooled together with other donations to fund all of our missions, just like traditional currency donations. The pooling of donations allows us to intervene based on actual needs on the ground, rather than financial considerations or the extensive media coverage of emergency situations.
How do you limit the environmental impact of cryptocurrency donations?
Médecins du Monde is very concerned about the environmental impact of cryptocurrencies. Therefore, at present, we have decided to collect funds only through cryptocurrencies that use the “Proof of Stake” model, such as Ethereum, which has reduced its energy consumption by 99% using this method. Bitcoin donations (“Proof of Work”) are not accepted by Médecins du Monde.
What cryptocurrencies does MdM accept?
Médecins du Monde only accepts cryptocurrencies that use the “Proof of Stake” model, such as Ethereum, Cardano, Solana, Polkadot, etc. Cryptocurrencies using the “Proof of Work” method, which have a larger ecological impact, are currently rejected. It is therefore not possible to donate directly in Bitcoin.
Can tax receipts be issued for cryptocurrency donations?
Médecins du Monde as well as other organisations, through the France Générosités union, are awaiting official clarification from the French Directorate General of Public Finances on this matter. Tax receipts may therefore be possible in the medium term.
However, as the capital gains from the sale of cryptocurrencies are taxable, using your crypto to donate to Médecins du Monde may reduce the flat tax (PFU) on your capital gains.
What fees are applied to donations?
As with all types of cryptocurrency transactions, fees are applied depending on the amount:
Additional “interchange” fees may apply, depending on the platform or wallet you use to make the payment.
Are anonymous donations accepted?
Médecins du Monde has chosen not to accept anonymous donations for reasons of traceability.
How is personal data protected?
Médecins du Monde is committed to complying with the applicable regulations on the protection of personal data, in particular the French “Data Protection Act” (Loi Informatique et Libertés) No. 78-17 of January 6, 1978, as amended, and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
The information collected through this form is necessary for Médecins du Monde to manage your donations and to appeal for your generosity.
We undertake not to transfer your data outside the European Union or to share it with partners in the non-profit sector.
You may also exercise your rights by writing to dpo-mdm@medecinsdumonde.net.
