Sabine

Sabine Babé Loubet welcomes those excluded from health care and those excluded from the law at the Médecins du Monde health care center in Nice. For many of them foreigners, some of whom have managed to cross the Italian border, even though it is closed across the mountains.

WHY AM I HERE?

« I have been working in social work from a very young age. I have chosen the associative and humanitarian sector for the freedom of action it confers. I was hired by Médecins du Monde in 1998, after a few months of volunteer work. Being a member of this association has allowed me to obtain several administrative victories. Indeed, by presenting yourself as a social worker of Médecins du Monde, you immediately have more weight. We say to ourselves:'' She won't give up on us until she wins her case.'' »

WHAT I DO

« t the Casoinfo-icon from Nice, we receive many foreigners, whether they are in an irregular situation or not, who do not know their rights or are unable to assert them. The geopolitical context of our region is particular, so the social climate is rather deleterious for our public. It is a border area that has only been attached to France since 1860 and that experienced a great wave of Italian migration, especially through the Roya Valley. This may explain why its inhabitants spontaneously welcomed the migrants in transit whom we are trying to help by providing them with care. »

WHAT I FEEL

« These people have been forced to cross the mountains to reach France because the border has been closed since June 2015 and the government has deployed a police and military force that is carrying out a real manhunt, not hesitating to deport minors to the border, or even to southern Italy, instead of entrusting them to Child Welfare. The action of Roya's inhabitants is more than praiseworthy. They rescued, protected and allowed these exiles to regain their strength by offering them shelter and food. »
