GENERAL FIGURES
- The total number of people living with HIV is estimated 38.6 million (UNAIDS, May 2006).
- 4.1 million people were newly infected with the virus in 2005 and 2.8 million died of it the same year.
- Since the epidemic was discovered in 1981, the virus has affected 65 million people and 25 million
have died of it.
- Two thirds of all people living with HIV are in sub-Saharan Africa
- In Asia, nearly 8,3 million people, of which 2,4 million are women, live with HIV
- Today, less than 20% of intravenous drug users are covered by HIV prevention programs
- Access to treatment:
Between 2001 and 2005, the number of people receiving antiretroviral treatment increased five-fold in
low and middle-income countries
Yet, at best, one in five people needing antiretroviral treatment are presently receiving it. In Asia, only
one in six people are receiving antiretroviral treatment.
MdM FIGURES:
- In 2005, the international network of MdM implemented 49 HIV/AIDS programs in 30 countries. The
majority in Africa (29 projects), followed by Asia (10 projects), Central America and the Caribbean (6
projects) and Central and Eastern Europe (4 projects).
- MdM France implemented 20 HIV/AIDS projects; MDM Spain: 15 projects; MDM Portugal: 5 projects;
MDM Canada: 3 projects; DOW: 4 projects and MDM Belgium: 1 project. There also exists a project in
Zimbabwe carried out by the French, Spanish and Canadian delegations.
More than one quarter of MDM’s international network combined budgets is currently devoted to the
fight against HIV/AIDS.
