Indonesia

The first phase of MdM’s project, aimed at reducing the prevalence of STIs and the incidence of HIV/AIDS
in Puncak Jaya district, took place between August 2004 and February 2006. 2007 has seen the reorientation of the programme towards primary healthcare and prevention of infectious diseases. We have also extended our activities to the neighbouring sub-district of Sinak and introduced training programmes for community health workers.

Communiqué de presse   Indonesia: floods hit Jakarta

06 February 2007

Following the torrential rain which has brought disaster to hundreds of thousands of people in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, Médecins du Monde has set up an emergency mission there.

This intervention was initiated on 6th February 2007 by an MdM team already based in the area which was working on a long term project to do with access to primary healthcare in the shanty towns of Jakarta.

The first two teams that were sent to the flooded area consisted of a doctor and a nurse, who conducted their consultations by returning to many of the neighbourhoods in which they had already worked previously. Two new teams are in the process of being prepared to go out to the region.

Médecins du Monde has sent kits containing medicines, and is also distributing hygiene kits, sarongs and floor matting to the people affected by the floods, as well as nutritional supplements for children under five years of age. An investigation into potential outbreaks of epidemics has been launched.
