Communiqué de presse   Burma : Médecins du Monde freight arrives in Rangoon

Paris, 12 May 2008

A plane chartered on Saturday from Bordeaux by Médecins du Monde arrived in Rangoon this morning with 22 tonnes of medical and logistical equipment.

Emergency kits intended to cover the primary healthcare needs of 20,000 people for three months arrived at their destination. The freight also included anti-malarial medicines, drugs to treat conditions such as severe respiratory infections or diarrhoea, anti-tetanus vaccines, tents and water-treatment equipment. The delivery is now being transported to MdM’s secure premises.

These supplies will enable MdM to start working in more areas south of Rangoon from tomorrow. In addition, Médecins du Monde is sending a team to the Irrawaddy Delta area to evaluate the needs of the most severely affected populations and identify priority areas.

The speed of the aid delivery contributes to early treatment of the affected populations.
