Despite sustained growth in recent years, Senegal still faces poverty and inequality. In fact, there is a significant income gap between the semi-arid Sahel region in the north and the rest of the country. In relation to health, the rural population, which is very spread out, has great difficulty getting access to healthcare.
Strengthening the local health system - Gamadji Sare
Activities :
MdM’s general objective is to help improve the health of the rural population by:
• strengthening human and material resources to supervise ‘health houses’ in the rural community;
• providing the salary of a travelling Senegalese nurse, as well as medical equipment for the ‘health houses’;
• mentoring and training healthcare workers, thanks to the regular presence of the travelling nurse among the health workers and matrons.
Outlook :
MdM’s work avoids any substitution approach, and instead helps to improve the operation of the existing health system. MdM works in partnership with a Senegalese development association in Gamadji (ASRADEC). These activities should improve access to quality healthcare in this rural community.
