The infighting between Palestinian political groups continued throughout 2007. Described as a ‘hostile entity’ by Israel, Gaza was subjected to a reinforced blockade in the autumn. Because of the almost total shutdown of the health infrastructure, the health system in the West Bank remains paralysed. The construction of the Wall, a key source of discrimination for Palestinians, continues, as does the construction of settlements.

Project 1 :

Providing primary healthcare - Jerusalem governorate, West Bank

Activities :

The co-ordination team in Jerusalem ensure the day to day operation of the projects in Nablus, Gaza and the governorate of Jerusalem. MdM supports five primary healthcare centres in Jerusalem governorate, with the following activities:

• training for health workers;
• refurbishing the centres;
• providing medicines and medical equipment.

Outlook :

Continuation of the programme and extension to four more health centres.

Project 2 :

Mental health - Nablus district, West Bank

Activities :

In co-ordination with the Palestinian Ministry of Health and in partnership with several local health facilities, MdM worked on:

• organisation of a de-stigmatisation and health information campaign among the Palestinian population (leaflets, adverts, TV and radio broadcasts);
• supporting therapeutic activities through literary cafés, two listening points and two psychological clinics in a health centre in Nablus;
• technical support to the healthcare workers of the primary healthcare centres and the mental health professionals (training and seminars on mental health).

Outlook :

Continuing the activities, setting up two medico-psychological community centres (Nablus and Jenin), in partnership with the Palestinian Ministry of Health and co-financed by the French Development Agency.

Project 3 :

Improving treatment for emergencies and providing primary healthcare - Gaza strip

Activities :

The MdM programme includes:

• first aid training for civilians, particularly for children in UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) schools;
• training 74 paramedics from the UNRWA health centres (programme finished in August 2007);
• facilitating a ‘training of trainers’ programme for ambulance workers of the Palestinian Red Crescent institutes in Gaza and Ramallah;
• training surgeons and providing surgical equipment to the Ministry of Health hospitals;
• refurbishing ten Ministry of Health primary healthcare centres, providing them with medicines and training their staff;
• organising health education activities in partnership with the Palestinian NGO, Palestinian Medical Relief Society (PMRS).

Outlook :

Continuing the programme and expanding the primary healthcare activities by supporting the Ministry of Health and PMRS (support for five new health centres).
