As a consequence of the new policy of ‘normalisation’ implemented by Ramzan Kadyrov, the Russiansupported president, the economic and political situation in Chechnya has become more stable. However, the drastic measures to improve security in the country have been accompanied by actions that violate human rights. Although some medical facilities have reopened and improved operationally, the provision of healthcare remains uneven, particularly between the capital Grozny and the most isolated regions.
Supporting victims of conflict - Nozhay-Iurt, Vedeno and Kurchaloi districts
Activities :
Médecins du Monde has been working in Chechnya since 1995, and continues to provide primary healthcare in three districts. These activities have included:
• providing medicines to 34 medical and obstetrics centres;
• organising training sessions on-site and off-site, and with the support of specialist doctors from the Caucasus, in order to ensure quality care is provided;
• carrying out a socio-medical study in July 2007 on the living conditions of the Chechen population.
Outlook :
Médecins du Monde will continue its activities in 2008. The health centres supported by MdM will be progressively handed over to the Chechen Ministry of Health. MdM will continue to provide training, technical support and equipment.
