Despite the reforms begun by the president Antonio Saca, El Salvador is still a country with high poverty indicators. There are high crime levels and gangs wield significant power, despite government measures to tackle impunity for human rights violations. The most vulnerable groups do not have access to healthcare in this country which lacks health facilities and where significant discrepancies between urban and rural areas exist.
Developing a community health system - Morazan region
Activities :
In partnership with the Salvadorian NGO MDS (Doctors for the Right to Health), MdM continued its health activities among vulnerable groups in the isolated rural areas in Morazan region. Activities in Ahuachapan and Cuscatlan regions have been added to the programme. Our programmes include:
• management training for all staff;
• development of the organisation’s communication system;
• renewing IT equipment and software training;
• disinfecting, training and prevention in 20 groups of houses, as part of an environmental clean-up campaign;
• construction of a well and a septic tank for the staff living accommodation, alongside the El Tablon health centre in Morazan.
Outlook :
2007 was the last year of the management and IT training programme for MDS staff. This training has improved management and organisation within MDS. The development of the organisation’s communication system improved the quality of MDS’s activities and will, therefore, help with fundraising
