In the Great Lakes area, Rwanda is a land-locked country in the heart of central Africa. Today Rwanda, touched by the consequences of the 1994 genocide in which a million people were killed, is rebuilding itself with a reconciliation policy confirmed by the presidential election in 2003. Many survivors, however, remain haunted by the trauma they suffered. Village tribunals, known as gacaca, have been established to enable victims to express themselves publicly and to call for justice.
Medical and psychological support for genocide survivors - Kigali, in Buhoro, Kibeho, Gatonde, Kibilizi, Busogo and Musanze sectors
Activities :
The programme has three themes:
• support and development of a shared action plan for psychological support and care for survivors of genocide in the country, with 34 trauma counsellors, 3 psychologists from the Ibuka association and paralegals;
• supporting the survivors involved in the ‘gacaca’ process in six sectors as part of a research-action process carried out in 2007;
• institutional support to our partner organisation Ibuka, in relation to technical aspects, finance and communication.
Outlook :
Continuing and developing the programme.
