Opération Sourire aims to bring back a smile to those disfigured by war, illness or malnutrition and to enable those excluded by society to regain their place in the community. Reconstructive surgery is currently unavailable in many countries because of a lack of qualified personnel, materials or infrastructure. Responding to this demand, and if there is currently no possibility of treatment by local staff, the Opération Sourire teams intervene to help this forgotten population.
6,000 patients have been operated on since 1989
Activities :
Opération Sourire is continually evolving and adapting to the local context of the countries it visits. The network continues to strengthen its ties with partners, ensuring comprehensive care for patients, from both the medical (intervention, rehabilitation) and social (care and follow up) perspectives. 24 teams left on missions in 2007, operating on 723 patients. Since the beginning of the programme in 1989, almost 6,000 people in 12 countries across Asia and Africa have been operated on. In addition, training of local teams remains a priority and local surgeons, once trained, are called on to treat specific cases independently.
This mission is made possible thanks to the voluntary commitment of over 100 healthcare professionals: surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses. In all, they dedicated almost 1,540 days to the missions in 2007 alone.
Outlook :
Opération Sourire hopes to carry out 33 missions in 14 countries in 2008. These missions will complement existing projects, offering both surgery and skills transfer for local staff. Some local surgeons, once trained will be asked to take charge of specific conditions. New missions are planned for Armenia, Yemen and Laos. These missions are carried out by teams from Germany, France and Japan, with a focus on building local capacity.
