On 21 April 2006, after several months of riots, the Nepalese king Gyanendra announced that he would ‘give power back to the people’. The Maoist rebels agreed to return to the new parliament in Kathmandu and signed a peace agreement with the Seven Parties of the coalition, ending the civil war and limiting the powers of the monarchy. However, the country severely lacks aid for health. The geography of Nepal and ten years of conflict have limited access to healthcare for the population, and hindered economic development and the education system.
Promoting mother and child health and microcredit activities - Sindupalchok district
Activities :
The programme aims to improve access to health services and to reduce maternal and infant mortality by:
• ensuring a 24 hour emergency obstetrics service (improving health posts and training health post staff);
• developing a sustainable network which combines micro-credit, healthcare and reproductive health education.
This network is supported by the women of the community and will eventually become autonomous;
• increasing community involvement in preparations for births;
• establishing the necessary conditions for high health service utilisation rates;
• improving and ensuring the sustainability of community resources through micro-finance activities.
Outlook :
To expand the number of villages reached by the activities and extend the work to the whole district
