Despite strong economic growth in the last ten years, India has not improved the circumstances of its 600 million poor people, who live on less than a dollar a day. In terms of medical issues, quality healthcare is reserved exclusively for higher castes in this country where the government only allocates 1.3% of the budget to health. Marked inequalities exist between the States (depending on the degree of corruption in their governance), and between rural and urban areas. Rajasthan is one of the poorest areas and displays the lowest health and development indicators.
Mother and child healthcare - Jaipur - Rajasthan
Activities :
MdM has been working in Jaipur since March 2007 at the request of a local association. The Midi-Pyrenees delegation has set up a mother and child health programme for women of reproductive age and children up to the age of five. With our local partner, JKSMS, seven health promoters:
• surveyed the field to identify the needs;
• raised awareness of health issues among beneficiaries;
• introduced a community-based mother and child health programme;
• accompanied women and children in health facilities by establishing a network;
• created a basic tool for the parameters concerning the healthcare circuit.
Outlook :
Consolidating our activities. Recruiting a local assistant to optimise the quality of care. Information, Education and Communication (IEC) activities on mother and child health for beneficiaries, community health groups, health promoters and traditional midwives. Clowning and forum theatre training for health promoters by the organisation Caravane-Theatre. Contact with other NGOs working in Jaipur shantytowns.
