Dagestan, a southern republic of the Russian Federation, occupies a strategic position at the crossroads of international oil transport routes. However, the country faces a tense climate because of ethnic conflicts between more than 60 minority groups. This internal instability is exacerbated by the consequences of the war in Chechnya. Moreover, the economic precarity means that there is almost no healthcare provision for the great majority of the population, especially in the most isolated mountain areas.
Improving women’s health - Makhatchkala women’s hospital
Activities :
To support the women’s charitable hospital in Makhatchkala, MdM has helped with:
• provision of medical equipment and medicines;
• improving the hospital’s capacity in terms of patient reception and medical treatment;
• support for the hospital’s legal activities, aimed at thwarting the regular intimidation concerning the land on which the hospital is built.
Outlook :
As part of a comprehensive approach to improving the health of vulnerable women, MdM will continue to support Makhatchkala hospital, to ensure quality maternal health services are provided. We will also deploy a mobile medical team to reach women living in remote mountain villages.
