In the mountainous Jebel Marra area at the junction of three Darfur provinces, access to healthcare has been extremely limited for civilians since the start of the conflict. This is because of a practically non-existent health system and the difficulties in travelling to referral centres. Fighting between the Sudanese army and the SLA rebels has prolonged this situation throughout the year.

ACTIVITIES

Since February 2010, we have had to considerably cut-back our work in the Jebel Marra, because of the ongoing conflict. The organisation continued to be present, however, particularly since MdM is the only organisation working in the area. Four medical clinics are operational (in Dera, Jawa, Gulumbai, and Fallujah). These clinics provide primary healthcare, reproductive healthcare, nutritional monitoring for children under five and health education activities. They also refer cases to Nyala hospital.


RESULTS

Each month an average of 6,000 general medical consultations, 800 reproductive health consultations and 20 referrals are carried out.


OUTLOOK

In February 2011, MdM was officially informed of the South Darfur governor’s decision to expel the organisation from the region. All of MdM’s work in Sudan has, therefore, been suspended.
