Rwanda

Rwanda was decimated in 1994 by the genocide in which more than a million people died. Today, the country is rebuilding itself on the basis of a policy of unity and reconciliation. An important aspect is the Gacacas, popular juridictions inspired by the country’s culture and tradition in relation to resolving conflict. This process may result in a re-opening of the wounds of 1994. MdM supports an association, Ibuka, which provides psychological support to survivors.

Rwanda is coming out a legal process started in 2003 and based on widespread public participation (Gacacas juridictions). This process involved the survivors reliving the traumas linked to the 1994 genocide which killed more than a million people. MdM is helping the organisation IBUKA to provide psychological support to survivors.

ACTIVITIES

The project is concerned with the psychological and social recovery of survivors of the Rwandan genocide. The victims involved in the Gacacas receive support via therapeutic outreach groups to deal with traumas and to develop social links. The programme also aims to develop the skills of medical and paramedical staff (training, exchange of best practices and capitalisation on experience). MdM provides institutional support to IBUKA on collaboration methods..

OUTLOOK

In 2011, after the Gacacas have finished, the programme will be expanded to other actors in the mental health field working with survivors. A forum for exchange will be set up, involving all relevant stakeholders from civil society and institutions.
