Russia

The Russian Federation continues its economic development. But the number of people left behind is huge. In Moscow, migrant workers have very limited access to healthcare. Much the same as the 225,000 indigenous peoples of the Great North who suffer as a result of geographical isolation and meager financial support from the regional authorities. MdM supports a programme of community health designed for the indigenous people, and medical care adapted for migrants in Moscow.

Supporting a community health programme for indigenous peoples.

Great North and Siberia - Long term

ACTIVITIES

In 2010, MdM signed a partnership agreement with the NGO Community Health Partnership (CHP) with the aim of helping them, from now until 2012, to strengthen and become autonomous in their activities.
In this context, MdM and CHP have together hosted training for health agents and specialists in addiction in Yakutsk. Another objective of this co-operation is to promote innovative methods of care for patients being treated for tuberculosis, as well as high-risk drinkers in Yakutsk and in the independent district of Nenetsia.

RESULTS

10 health agents and 88 health professional (general practitioners, addiction specialists and psychiatrists) were trained in 2010.

OUTLOOK

In 2011, the partnership with the NGO Community Health Partnership will continue with a new agreement aimed at MdM’s gradual withdrawal between now and 2012.

Access to health care for migrants

Moscow - Long term

ACTIVITIES

In 2008, MdM set up an emergency hotline and developed a referral system for a network of doctors known as ‘friends to migrants’. Activities to prevent infectious diseases have also been developed, in conjunction with local organisations helping migrants. In February, an evaluation recommended that the management of the hotline should be transferred to a local partner organisation. MdM’s activities drew to a close at the end of May 2010.

RESULTS

1,215 people were referred to healthcare providers following a call to the hotline.

OUTLOOK

As part of a European and cross-border approach to the problem of migration, MdM intends to re-evaluate the health needs of migrants from different countries, including the Russian Federation, over the course of 2011..
