ACTIVITIES
MdM carries on professional exchanges in order to support the Romanian organisation, COPII. The organisation also works to return children (in particular new-borns) who have been placed with social services to their natural families. The return of the infant is supported by involving public healthcare workers (in hospitals, DPC, municipal social servies), raising awareness amongst childcare assistants to encourage the existence of family ties and interventions with the mother and the extended family. Finally, MdM undertook a retrospective community study (2006-2009) on the abandonment of children in Satu Mare region in order to provide Romanian stakeholders with a better understanding of the causes of abandonment, of possible solutions and potential areas for community-based co-operation.
OUTLOOK In 2011, MdM will continue the prevention activities with mothers who are in a vulnerable socio-economic situation and/or showing signs of pregnancies at risk. The project will also continue to mobilise local key players (voluntary sector, institutional and in the community), using the recommendations of the study as a starting point and, finally, MdM will help COPII become more autonomous.
