| The Israeli embargo on the Gaza strip continues to have disastrous consequences on the living conditions of the population, where 80% depend on help from abroad. Delivery of supplies and maintenance of equipment are severely restricted, and medical personnel cannot, in this situation, benefit from the complementary training that would enable them to ensure quality healthcare.

Access to primary and secondary health care.
Gaza - Long term
ACTIVITIES
Having assisted in the opening of emergency rooms in 11 primary healthcare centres in the Gaza Strip, MdM will now support their operation by training and supervising medical teams in emergency care, and by ensuring provision of essential medicines and medical equipment.
MdM has organised training in orthopaedic surgery in three hospitals, in order to improve the techniques of the Gazan surgeons. To prevent diseases linked with water, health education sessions have been organised for the population, and particularly for the women.
RESULTSThere was a 29% increase in consultations in the emergency rooms of the 11 MdM-supported healthcare centres in the first six months of 2010..
OUTLOOKIn 2011 the focus will be on linking the primary health centres with the new hospital, in collaboration with MdM Spain, with a focus on emergency preparedness.

| On the West Bank, the population still suffers violence connected with the settlement expansion, as the freeze has not held. Mental health remains the poor relation where health services are concerned, and suffers from a lack of resources. After years of violence, this type of care is becoming indispensable, but the Palestinians only have limited access to care. MdM works to improve mental healthcare opportunities, and helps with the detection and care of problems, especially in children.

Medical and psychological care.
Nablus and Jenin, West Bank - Long term
ACTIVITIESMdM’s programme takes place in two refugee camps, with provision of psychiatric and psychological consultations in UNRWA clinics. The focus is on expanding the scope of mental health training, started in 2009, for the UNRWA and Palestinian Red Crescent health workers, as well as training for local organisations’ support workers. The objective is to enable early detection of patients, and to refer patients and help them to reintegrate into society once their condition has improved..
RESULTS5,200 psychological and psychiatric consultations and home visits were carried out..
OUTLOOKAfter two and a half years working on mental health, we have begun to document the programme that has been running in the north, enabling a complete analysis of the activities to be carried out. This will help us to define an intervention strategy for a new project, which could be developed in the south of the country, helping the Palestinian and Lebanese populations.
