In 2010, the army continued its operations against insurgents, in the tribal Pashtun areas, forcing civilians to move towards the foothills. In consequence there has been a dramatic rise in the health needs of these areas. In the summer, the exceptional monsoon rains caused flooding along the banks of the River Indus and the Kabul River, plunging a large, already fragile population into a health emergency.

Kyber-Pakhtunkhwa-KPK (ex NWFP) - EMERGENCY

ACTIVITIES

MdM provides mobile primary healthcare to the civilian populations affected by the crises, whether man-made or natural. This includes a programme of nutritional support, and preparing for epidemics, mainly cholera (monitoring and contingency planning). A large study on obstacles to healthcare access (economic, geographic, sociological) has been carried out in the Buner and Swabi districts, in order to identify needs at the end of the acute crisis resulting from military operations.

Thanks to trained personnel, used to mounting a rapid response, MdM was immediately able to increase the number of mobile clinics so as to cover part of the flooded areas of Charsadda and Nowshera districts. In Kohat, where MdM was already present, a centre caring for cases of acute diarrhoea was set up in order to respond to the needs of the whole district.

RESULTS

More than 120,000 consultations carried out, nearly 3,000 pregnant women were monitored and 2,097 people treated for diarrhoea (of these, 359 were severely dehydrated).

OUTLOOK

In this situation of extreme instability, MdM will carry on its strategy specifically to respond to emergencies in three ways: mobility, in order to reach people affected by the crises wherever they are; immediate response, in order to have a potential for rapid assessment and response; and performance, to optimise the acceptability, safety and effectiveness of actions.

A woman of 23 years old at Amankhot, accompanied by her two-year old son

“He is my only child. He is too weak, even to get up, and he cries all the time. He is my only reason for living, my support for the future.”

Pakistan has seen recent economic and political upheaval, and was subjected to numerous attacks in 2009. Against this difficult backdrop, the situation for women remains precarious. Since 2005, MdM has been devoted, together with the Department of Social Affairs, to the creation of new refuges, called Dar Ul Aman (‘house of peace’), in which female victims of domestic violence can find protection.

Struggling against domestic violence towards women.

Punjab region - Long term

ACTIVITIES

Victims of physical, sexual and/or psychological violence—in need of comprehensive care and support—find refuge in the DUA. Thanks to a close collaboration between MdM and the Department of Social Affairs, the programme can now help these women by bringing them medical, legal and psychosocial assistance.
MdM is involved in the 34 DUA in Punjab, particularly by building capacity within the Department of Social Affairs by way of training, with the objective that the department delivers suitable services which meet the needs of the residents and their children. In addition, civil society organisations are involved in the delivery of services and made aware of the issue of violence against women, to ensure the continuity of the care.

RESULTS

900 women benefited from medical consultations, 12,500 from psychological consultations and 3,500 from legal assistance.

A young Afghan woman

“I fled Kabul to escape an arranged marriage. I crossed the Pakistani border and was forcibly married. Finally I found refuge in a Dar ul-Aman where I have stayed for two years. I was lucky to be directed to a shelter where today I am learning to read and write. I am also having training to become a seamstress.”
