| In 2010, the army continued its operations against insurgents, in the tribal Pashtun areas, forcing civilians to move towards the foothills. In consequence there has been a dramatic rise in the health needs of these areas. In the summer, the exceptional monsoon rains caused flooding along the banks of the River Indus and the Kabul River, plunging a large, already fragile population into a health emergency. |

| Pakistan has seen recent economic and political upheaval, and was subjected to numerous attacks in 2009. Against this difficult backdrop, the situation for women remains precarious. Since 2005, MdM has been devoted, together with the Department of Social Affairs, to the creation of new refuges, called Dar Ul Aman (‘house of peace’), in which female victims of domestic violence can find protection. |

| A young Afghan woman “I fled Kabul to escape an arranged marriage. I crossed the Pakistani border and was forcibly married. Finally I found refuge in a Dar ul-Aman where I have stayed for two years. I was lucky to be directed to a shelter where today I am learning to read and write. I am also having training to become a seamstress.” |
