Supporting care for malnourished children.
Keita - long term.
ACTIVITIESMdM provided refresher training for health staff on malnutrition treatment protocols, improved the organisational capabilities of the district management teams, improved the flow of information, trained community workers to identify cases of malnutrition, equipped and supported nutritional recovery centres which care for complicated cases. Finally, MdM facilitated the distribution of nutritional supplies provided by the World Food Programme and Unicef, and built up a supply to be able to cope with gaps in provision.
RESULTS19,645 children treated in three districts. Three intensive nutritional recovery and education centres (CRENI) and 44 outpatient centres for nutritional recovery and education (CRENAS) received support.
OUTLOOKThe project will be completed in February 2011. MdM is going to integrate a nutrition component into a large integrated family planning programme in Illéla district, because projects in the region have shown that the problem of child malnutrition is directly linked to the length of time between pregnancies (birth spacing.

A young mother 18 years old, inpatient in Abalak CRENI with her seven month-old baby “Since we were admitted to the CRENI, the nurses have really looked after my son. They were always there to give him water and medicine. Luckily this care is free, otherwise people would have crossed their arms and watched my son die.”

Providing treatment for malnutrition and family planning services.
Tahoua, Abalak and Tchintabaraden districts - Long term
ACTIVITIESCommunity networks are trained to run skills development centres and deliver workshops on nutrition, as well as run counselling sessions (group discussions on family planning) in partnership with health centres. They are trained to distribute contraceptives to women in possession of a prescription from a qualified health worker. Awareness-raising and advocacy activities also take place: theatrical events, sermons from the imams and thematic workshops with the authorities.
RESULTSIncrease of 20% in contraceptive coverage, of 25% in the rate of antenatal consultations and of 42% in assisted deliveries.
OUTLOOKThe relevance of a programme which acts on both nutrition and birth spacing has now been demonstrated. MdM would like, therefore, to launch a programme of support in Illéla district in the south of Tahoua region. The objective is to improve access to nutrition and family planning services..

| An imam “Women’s rights are not taken into account. For many people women only have duties. There is a failure of responsibility and people do not think about education for children. Religion says that God nourishes everyone. We must not forget that God also said to educate our children and to offer them a good standard of living.”
