Almost seven years after the end of the civil war, Liberia continues the process of reconstruction. Despite strong political will, the health system remains fragile and the government’s contribution to the health sector is limited in relation to the scale of the needs. In collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the local health authorities, MdM supports the implementation of health reforms and training of healthcare workers.

IMPROVING THE PROVISION OF HEALTHCARE FOR RURAL POPULATIONS.

Boung County - Long term

ACTIVITIES

MdM provides technical and financial support for the reconstruction of the health system, to
ensure the continuity of care at all levels. The organisation has been actively involved in steering recent policies on community mother and child health, mental health, tackling HIV/AIDS, health financing and human resources. Ten health facilities are supported in the provision of general consultations and mother and child health consultations (preventing STIs, prevention, testing and reducing mother-to-child transmission of HIV).

Gbarnga health centre has been refurbished and expanded. The centre was inaugurated in December by the Liberian president and is now the country’s first rural hospital specialised in mother and child healthcare and obstetric care (55 bed capacity).

Psychiatric consultations and psychological support sessions are provided (training specialist healthcare staff).

Awareness-raising activities on different themes—such as gender-related violence—are being held in villages, in order to strengthen the relationships between communities and health services. Finally, the programme supports the county medical school and ongoing professional education to help tackle the shortage of human resources for health in rural areas.

RESULTS

114,449 general consultations in 2010, 1,494 births (including transfers), 2,255 HIV tests for pregnant women and 5,505 BCG vaccinations for children.

OUTLOOK

MdM continues to support the county’s health services, in close collaboration with other NGOs. We will step up efforts to support the medical training programme, to consolidate the county obstetric reference hospital’s activities and improve the supervision and co-ordination skills of the local health authorites. MdM will also be involved in the development of national policies.
