In the highlands of Western Papua—one of the most isolated regions of the world—access to healthcare remains limited. The numbers of cases of AIDS has risen to the highest in the country (2.4%), and experts estimate that it will reach 7% in five years. In this difficult situation, MdM has set up a programme of sexual and reproductive health (raising awareness and supporting diagnosis and treatment for people living with HIV/AIDS).

Improving access to sexual and reproductive health

Western Papua - Long term

ACTIVITIES

MdM intends to make the programme sustainable by strengthening the capacity of its local partners: the District Health Bureau, the Student Club and the organisation Primari. With them, MdM organises and leads sessions raising awareness on sexual and reproductive health for the communities. Also the organisation develops and distributes information, education and communication material focused on HIV/AIDS. The programme also supports the operation of two screening centres, organises training for health personnel, community health agents and peer educators, and advocates for access to healthcare for the population.

RESULTS

In 2010, 50% of pregnant women chose to give birth in a healthcare setting, compared to only 20% at the beginning of the project in 2007.

OUTLOOK

With the aim of transferring activities and responsibilities, MdM will focus on supporting its Indian partner JKSMS and will strengthen the knowledge of the beneficiary populations. Moreover, a particular effort will be undertaken to convince the Jaipur authorities to takeover the programme, partially or in its entirety.
