ACTIVITIES
In 2010, the programme in partnership with the Indian organisation JKSMS, trained 50 volunteer community health workers. Training these people, who live in the shantytowns, will perpetuate the activities of the programme and bolster the health knowledge of the community beneficiaries. Nearly 25% of the activities previously set up by the JKSMS social workers have now been handed over to the community health workers. In parallel, the team has continued to show their presence, almost daily, in the shantytowns and strengthens ties with the Jaipur health authorities. The team continues to raise awareness through interactive theatre, traditional methods and group or individual interactions to improve healthcare access for the populations.
RESULTS In 2010, 50% of pregnant women chose to give birth in a healthcare setting, compared to only 20% at the beginning of the project in 2007.
OUTLOOK With the aim of transferring activities and responsibilities, MdM will focus on supporting its Indian partner JKSMS and will strengthen the knowledge of the beneficiary populations. Moreover, a particular effort will be undertaken to convince the Jaipur authorities to takeover the programme, partially or in its entirety.
