Guinea

The hopes resting on president Dadis Camarawere dashed with the violent repression of an opposition demonstration in September 2009. The economic and social context remains fragile, and the situation in prisons is not a priority. With a local partner, MdM is tackling malnutrition in a prison and aims to improve detention conditions.

IMPROVING HEALTH IN PRISON.

Kindia - Long term

ACTIVITIES

The objective of the partnership between MdM and the organisation Kindianaise Assistance to Detainees (KAD) is to improve detention conditions in Kindia central prison in terms of the environment (hygiene and sanitation, improvements, refurbishment and maintenance of the premises), health (medical consultations, supplying a pharmacy, nutritional support for people with malnutrition), and reintegration (education, literacy, income-generating activities).
MdM provides technical, financial and moral support to KAD.

RESULTS

In 2010, 224 detainees were treated and 827 received care from KAD for malnutrition, in partnership with the ICRC.

OUTLOOK

MdM plans, context permitting, to increase support for income-generating activities as well as looking for new funders for the programme so that KAD can become increasingly independent.
