ACTIVITIES In partnership with the local authorities, MdM supports 10 health facilities and the regional hospital, under the auspices of the national mother and child health policy. In the field, MdM provides surgical and psycho-social care to women suffering from fistulas and supports the maternity unit and operating theatre to be able to carry out emergency caesarians. MdM provides the health facilities with support for maternal and neonatal care (antenatal consultations, caring for complicated deliveries, sending dangerous deliveries to hospital by ambulance). The project also raises awareness among villagers about issues around mother and child health and trains traditional birth attendants. In response to the food crisis which affected the Sahel area in 2010, MdM also supported treatment for conditions linked to acute malnutrition for children under five in 20 health facilities between May and October.
RESULTS 60 women suffering from fistulas were operated on in 2010 and 11,505 people received information on maternal and neonatal health or on fistulas.
OUTLOOK MdM will reinforce its support for the health facilities in the region by expanding to another 15 centres and expand access to primary healthcare for children under five. At the hospital, MdM continues to concentrate on training national surgical teams to provide quality care to patients.
