ACTIVITIES

The programme focuses on strengthening and consolidating care and prevention activities in relation to malnutrition in children monitored and/or accommodated in a Nutritional Recovery and Education Centre.

Three weekly nurse care sessions in the provincial hospital (CMA) take place, enabling better medical and nutritional monitoring for all the children. This also enables us to consolidate the partnership with the Nutritional Recovery and Education Centre (NREC) in the CMA.

A five-bed NREC treatment facility has been set up inside the provincial hospital to care for malnourished children. Training was provided for the whole NREC team in May 2010 on the production of Misola flour and on hygiene practices.

RESULTS

46 children affected by acute or chronic malnutrition have received medical care in the NREC. 318 children have been monitored as outpatients with nutrition advice and distribution of flour. 138 children have been screened and treated in villages.

OUTLOOK

In 2011, MdM will consolidate its activities by strengthening the partnership with the district hospital, by promoting systematic referral of severely malnourished children to the NREC. A Misola flour manufacturing unit will also be set up in order to prevent chronic malnutrition and to generate income which will help sustain the NREC activities in the long term. Finally, the programme will fund the provision of medical and recovery equipment in the NREC.

ACTIVITIES

The dental surgery (open five days a week) continues its work with an increase in the number of consultations (712) compared to previous years (around 65 patients per month, and of these 80% are new patients). The mobile clinic has continued its work (one outing per week) over the year with heavy attendance (546 patients, nearly all of them new) and a net increase in the percentage of extractions because of a reduction in costs (70% in 2010, compared to 35% in 2009).

RESULTS

712 consultations, with an extraction performed in 50% of these cases.

OUTLOOK

In 2011, MdM will develop new activities: reducing the costs of extractions and the introduction of a service to produce and fit false teeth with a view to the financial sustainability of the project after MdM’s withdrawal at the end of 2011.
A new service of the dental chair (checking that it is working properly) is scheduled for March 2011. In June, the nurse will be trained in dentistry and will strengthen the PRAH team.
