Médecins du Monde works on domestic violence against women

Caring for women affected by violence

MdM provides assistance to a network, known as WASSILA, by supporting a free, anonymous telephone helpline for women affected by violence

Promoting health education relating to chronic diseases

Since 2005, MdM has been working in Constantine with the Social Development Agency, which now covers the costs of asthma treatment.

Border closures in northern Algeria have effectively blocked thousands of sub-Saharan migrants. Only around a hundred were able to obtain refugee status. The vast majority of migrants live outwith the law and in very precarious conditions. Their access to healthcare is particularly difficult and civil society struggles to deal with the situation.

FACILITING ACCESS TO HEALTHCARE FOR MIGRANT

Alger wilaya, towns in the south and on the coast - Long term

ACTIVITIES

The programme aims to improve access to healthcare and to other rights for migrants in Algiers by bringing together various local players. There programme has four components: creation of a network of health service mediators, helping organisations to support migrants, developing community-based health education activities and launching a process of capitalising on this experience and transnational lobbying activities.

Subject to structural reforms that tend towards progressive privatisation, the Algerian public health sector is in crisis. As a result, access to healthcare is becoming increasingly difficult, and unaffordable, for the population. The follow-up of treatment for chronic conditions is deteriorating and health education, prevention and accompaniment activites are very poorly developed.

HEALTH EDUCATION.

Constantine - long term

ACTIVITIES

MdM is supporting Association Cirta Oxygène (ACO) with the implementation of a primary and community health promotion programme. This programme involves promoting health education for patients affected by chronic diseases, by developing community-based activities and practices that do not depend on medication. The programme also aims to demonstrate the value of these practices to the country’s health authorities and other stakeholders.

RESULTS

340 individuals have participated in ACO’s various activities (five healthy eating workshops, two thematic focus groups, individual interviews, one training session on controlling blood sugar levles, three awareness-raising campaigns, six meetings with public sector doctors and one seminar on health education).

OUTLOOK

From 2011, ACO would like to develop its activities with a younger target group. The organisation has submitted an application to the multi-party joint programme. In addition, the organisation is looking for funds to be able to become autonomous.
