Historical background
Created in 1980, Médecins du Monde intervened in the event of major international crises and started fighting exclusion in France in 1986, opening a healthcare centre and the first free, nonymous and voluntary HIV testing centre in Paris.

THE 1990s : INCREASING THE NUMBER OF PROGRAMMES
- >> The organisation underwent major expansion at the end of the 1990s : over 70 programmes were implemented throughout the world, in more than 50 countries. MdM also developed its activities in reducing the harm associated with drug abuse.
THE 2000’S : STILL MILITANT, FOREVER INDEPENDENT
- >> The increasingly complex nature of humanitarian action, stemming from the increase in military interventions in the guise of humanitarian missions, has led MDM to reaffirm its independence and activism, whilst maintaining its presence amongst the most vulnerable population groups.
>> 1980 : Creation of MDM in France under the principle of « our volunteers go where others do not and bear witness to the intolerable ».
>> 1986 : Formation of the France Mission and creation of a first free reception, health care and guidance centre in Paris. Creation of o first HIV screening centre.
>> 1990 : In New York, the United National General assembly voted in favour of the French initiated resolution that legitimises the « right of humanitarian intervention ».
>> 1999 : Interventions in Kosovo, Timor and Chechnya.
>> 2005 : Interventions in Indonesia and Sri Lanka following the tsunami.
>> 2007 : Publication of the 1st European observatory on Access to Care Report
